Trust

Who Do You Turn To When Life Breaks Down?

Opening Question
When did you have to take a risk and trust someone or something with your life?

Story
When I was 18 years old, I left my college town in Northeast Missouri on a cold mid December day to drive 750 miles West to my home town of Aurora, Colorado. The drive went well until late in the evening in Eastern Colorado when I ran into a severe snow storm. That snow storm soon turned into a blizzard.

Moving along through the snow and wind, traveling at 40-50 miles an hour my car suddenly began to decelerate and was soon dead on the side of the highway with white out conditions outside my window. I was stuck in the middle of nowhere and no-one was aware of where exactly I was. This happened long before cell phones even existed.

I jumped out of my car and waited for the next car to drive by. Soon enough I could see two lights coming toward me from the East. As they converged on my location, I realized it wasn’t a car but rather a semi truck. I jumped up and down on the side of the highway as it passed and then turned to see what the driver would do.

To my relief the taillights came on and the driver pulled over to the side of the road. I ran to the passenger side of the cab, reached up and opened the door. A man with a western twang said, “Looks like you gotta problem. Where ya headed?”

Four hours later he dropped me off safely at a truck stop just outside of Denver. Looking back at that moment I am surprised at the trust I put in a man I didn’t know, in a place far from home, in a situation I desperately wanted to be get out of. But then again, there were not many other options.

Application
It’s amazing who and what we will trust when the going gets tough. At times we may have limited options. Who do you trust when times get difficult in your life? Where do you look to when you feel down, alone, stranded? What is your source of peace when the storm is raging and you are far from comfort?

Isaiah 26: 3-4 says, “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord, the Lord himself, is the Rock eternal.”

Follow Up Question
What is something that you need to trust God with right now? What holds you back from trusting Him?

Prayer
Dear Lord, thank you so much for loving me and always being there to rescue me. Please help me/us  to trust you with (A,B,C). Help me to trust your ways and your promises and knowing that you have a plan for our lives. Let us allow you to take the wheel and drive us home.

Amen
